Abha is a city 980km southwest of Riyadh situated at an elevation of 2270 m (7,500 feet) above sea level giving it a relatively moderate climate. It has become a mountain retreat and vacation spot for people from across Saudi Arabia and the other Arabian Gulf countries.
According to 2010 census figures it has a population of 366,551.
The Saudi government has been promoting Abha as a tourist destination and has created events, such as the Abha Festival during the summer, to draw people to the city. Events are organized to attract visitors to discover the city and its surroundings, such as sporting events, shows, exhibitions and musical performances by famous Arabic poets and singers.
A visit to Abha City offers attractions such as Al Muftaha village, Shada Palace, Visitors Center, Tuesday’s traditional market place and a cable car ride.
